Memorial to Conscientious Objectors, Edinburgh, UK

Shortlisted, Invited Competition, 2017

Our collaboration with the artist Donald Urquhart explores the relationship between art, architecture and landscape, to create a memorial which weaves together a series of narratives to create multiplicity of meanings. It directly engages the visitor in a physical way - creating an experience never to be forgotten.

Our proposal takes the form of journey, beginning in the expanse of the Gardens and ending in an intimate contemplation space. A white granite path leads to an architectural frame enclosing a series of carefully choreographed narrative elements - granite, slate and cherry blossom. Light is manipulated by the frame to add poignancy to the memorial, with particular care taken to how sunlight penetrates the space on International Conscientious Objectors Day.

A place to pause in reflection.
